Open the activity
Gather
A glass prism or clear faceted crystal, direct sunlight, and a white wall or sheet of paper.
Try
- Darken the room slightly while allowing one narrow beam of sunlight.
- Adult holds and slowly turns the prism in the beam.
- Look for a band of colors on the wall or paper.
- Move the prism closer and farther. Notice what changes.
Say simply: The prism bends each color by a slightly different amount, so the colors spread apart.
Safety: Never look directly at the Sun through a prism or any optical object.
